a ceramic model shrine in which a 14 ounce, 4" × 4.5" bronze model of a horned calf was found. Traces reveal that the calf was covered with a thick overleaf of pure silver. It would have stood on a small platform and been exhibited as emerging from an “entrance” at the base of the shrine. In Ugaritic mythology and in Canaanite iconography, the calf was associated with Baal.42 Later, Jeroboam I constructed golden calves at Bethel and Ai, which he associated with the worship of Yahweh.
